Situated
in the northern India state of Uttaranchal, the Jim Corbett National Park
occupies a position in the verdant foothills of the Himalayan massifs. The
park was the hunting preserve of the British before it was actually
established as a national park in the year 1936. Corbett national park covers a huge area
of 1,200 sq km, sheltering a wide variety of mammals, birds and reptiles.
Much of the credit of setting up of the park goes to Mr Jim Corbett, the
hunter-naturalist turned author, who spent a significant number of years
inside the jungles of the park.
Wildlife of Corbett National Park
The park boasts a diversified landscape including hilly areas, riverine
areas, marshes, valleys and plateaus. Sal trees extend in profusion over the
low-lying areas. It is due to this varied landscape forms that the park has
been able to shelter 50 mammal species, 580 bird species and 25 species of
reptiles.
Though tigers, leopards, elephants and crocodiles are the major attractions
for wildlife lovers, the park offers to watch species like Himalayan black
bear, sloth bear, leopard cat, jungle cat, fishing cat, hyena, jackals,
antelopes, wild dog, sambar, deer, Himalayan palm civet, Indian Gray
mongoose, common otter etc.
Take out time to get to the Ram Ganga river shores where you would see
long-snouted and fish eating crocodile species. You can spot the goat
antelopes in the hilly areas while langur and rhesus monkeys can be seen in
a sportive mood all across the park. These monkeys are the only defenders
who raise an alarm in the jungle on seeing tigers and leopards lurking
close.

royal option to hit the jungle trails is an elephant safari while the most
