a trip to the Idukki Wildlife Sanctuary which covers 77 sq km of tropical
semi evergreen forests and deciduous forests. Declared as a wildlife
sanctuary back in 1976, Idukki is the wildlife haven include the regions of
Udumpanchola and Thodupuzha districts of Kerala.

Canopied by lush greenery, the Idukki Wildlife Sanctuary has an undulating
hilly terrain with elevation ranging between 450 m and 758 m. Elephants and
the Indian bisons are the major draws for wildlife fanciers here. Besides,
the sanctuary harbours animal species like tiger, leopard, Niligir langur,
wild dog, jungle cat, wild boar etc.
Not only mammals, Idukki wildlife sanctuary also has a considerable variety of reptiles
and birds. King cobras, kraits, vipers and other non-venomous snakes are the
commonly sighted reptilian species. Bird watchers too can have a good time
with avian species like hornbill, jungle fowl, myna, laughing thrush, black
bulbul, peafowl, woodpecker, kingfisher etc.

can choose from the options of an elephant safari, jeep safari or touring
the jungles in your own vehicle. A tourist guide is always available to keep
you on the track and inform you about the major floral and faunal population
of the sanctuary. To keep low on your budget, you can also share a jeep with
other fellow travellers.
The ideal time to visit the sanctuary is between December and April.

Idukki is built across the Kuravan and Kurathi Hills. A major draw for
visitors to Idukki, the dam has the distinction of being the first arch dam
to be erected in Asia. The dam measures 550 ft in height and 650 ft in
width.
» Kuthumkal Waterfalls : Much popular with tourists
as a picnic spot, the picturesque waterfalls rushes down from wooded hills
and offers a splendid sight for tourists and travellers to soak up. Here,
you can also interact with the locals of the nearby towns and villages.
Accessibility
Cochin or Kochi, which is 133 km from Idukki, is the closest airport both
domestic and international flights to the key destinations of the country
and the world. Kottayam, 133 km away, is the closest railhead with
connecting trains to all the major parts of Kerala and outside. National
Highway 49 passes through the Idukki providing Idukki link with the key
destinations of the state and the outside. You can avail of regular KSRTC
bus services from the Thodupuzzha bus station.
