
The
wildlife in the northeastern part of the Indian subcontinent is no less
mesmeric. The Kaziranga National Park, located in the state of Assam,
happens to be a regular haunt of wildlife fanciers from all across the
globe. Though the Indian Rhino is the cynosure of all eyes here, the park,
covering an area of 430 sq km, has no less varieties of other mammal and
avian species. Its location on the banks of the mighty Brahamputra river
also adds much to the charm of the scenery.
Wildlife of Kaziranga National Park
The swamps and the tall dense growth of elephant grass makes it an ideal
habitat for the Indian one-horned rhino, which is the biggest draw for
tourists and visitors here. A wildlife safari into the confines of the park
include sightings of animal species like Indian bison, swamp deer, hog deer,
tiger, leopard, Jungle cat, capped langurs, wild boar, jackal, wild buffalo,
Hoolock gibbon etc.
Birding at Kaziranga is no less a worthy experience for wildlife
enthusiasts. You can see and capture in your cameras both the colourful
species of domestic and the migratory birds. Commonly sighted avian species
in the park are Oriental honey buzzard, black-shouldered kite, black kite,
Brahminy kite, Palla's fishing eagle, white-tailed eagle, grey-headed
fishing eagle etc. During winters around the marshes, you can watch
migratory species like greylag geese, bar-headed geese, falcated duck,
Northern shoveller, red-crested pochard etc.

Kaziranga National Park. An elephant ride in the wee hours of the morning is

The ideal time to enjoy a wildlife safari at Kaziranga is between
mid-November and early April.

Accessibility
The Guwahati (217 km) and Jorhat (97 km) are the two convenient airports
located close to the park. The railhead of Furkating lies at 75 km from the
national park. National Highway 37 provides good road links to the park. The
Assam State Transport Corporation runs regular busses connecting to
different parts of the state and outside.
