Kerala
offers an altogether different world to the holidaymakers, as compared to
the other parts of the country. Nature's blessings can be seen and
experiences, from one corner of the state to the other. The state boasts a
number of stunning beach spots where a holiday means having the time of your
life. The 600-kilometre-long shoreline has such famous beaches as Alappuzha,
Kochi, Kovalam, Varkala, Poovar, Cherai etc. The mild aroma of the coconut
groves, the gentle murmur of waves and the seaside lifestyle and sights
render the beaches desirable by all.
Some of the most renowned beaches of Kerala are as follows :
Alappuzha Beach
Lovingly referred to as the ' Venice of the East', Alappuzha is one of the
most preferred beach spots in the southern Indian state of Kerala. The
erstwhile thriving port offers a wonderful beach to tourists and travellers
from all parts of the world. The exotic town of Alappuzha occupies a
position between the Arabian Sea and the Punnamada backwaters. Swaying
palms, the gentle waves of the sea and a maze of rivers and canals along
with a culture that thrives by its side, Alappuzha can be termed as a
destination of a lifespan.
Kochi Beach
Infused with history, the beach at Kochi is one of the most picturesque
beaches in the state. It's owing to its wonderful location and
heart-stopping scenery, that the beach is fondly called the 'Queen of the
Arabian Sea'. Surrounded by numerous tiny exotic islands, the beach remains
dotted with interesting historical landmarks. Take out time to visit
attractions like the Dutch Palace, the Jewish Synagogue, St Francis Church
etc. The sight of the exclusive Chinese Fishing Nets is a major draw for
tourists arriving here.
Kovalam Beach

Kovalam,
meaning grove of coconut trees, is a worthy addition to the list of beaches
in Kerala. Much popular with tourists, the beach exists in a crescent shape,
further being segregated into three parts - the Lighthouse Beach, the Hawa
Beach and the Samudra Beach. Take a stroll along the beach and observe the
local fisherman busy to get their day's catch. In the evening, the Kathakali
performances seem to complete the holiday experience.
Kumarakom Beach
Kumarakom is positioned on the banks of the Vembanad Lake, a wetland of
international repute. The beach here happens to be a wonderful option to
have a laid back holiday. The Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary is a major tourist
attraction, harbouring both domestic and migratory avian species. The
Vembanad Lake is a famous picnic spot and offers excellent options of
boating and fishing.
Varkala Beach
The Varkala Beach invites holidaymakers with its quiet atmosphere and long
sandy expanse. Locally famous as the Papanasam Beach, the beach is also an
important pilgrimage centre. A dip in the mineral springs at Varkala is said
to rid one of sins. Another big draw for tourists here is the Sree
Janardhana Swamy Temple which is believed to be as ancient as 2000 years
old.
