fanciers never fail to include a trip to the Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary, on
their holidays in Kerala. The sanctuary, a Shangri-la for bird watchers, is
positioned on the banks of the Vembanad Lake, a wetland of international
repute. The sanctuary claims an area of 14 acres and shelters varied species
of both domestic and migratory birds. The town of Kottayam is just 12 km
from here.
Wildlife Species of Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary
One of the most romantic backwater destinations in Kerala, Kumarakom is not
a new name to bird watchers and ornithologists. This cluster of islands is
home to numerous domestic and migratory avian species arriving here from as
far as Siberia and parts of Central Asia. The chatter and chirp, resulting
into cacophony, as you sail smoothly along the exotic backwaters.
At the Kumarakom bird sanctuary, you will watch bird species like waterfowl, cuckoo, owl,
egret, heron, water duck, black-headed ibis, storks, kingfishers,
woodpeckers, flycatchers etc. The endangered Siberian Cranes are a major
attraction for bird watchers in Kumarakom bird sanctuary. Other commonly sighted species include
larks, parrots, wood beetles, teal etc.

being a cluster of tiny islands, can be explored on a houseboat. Take a boat
ride along the backwaters of Kumarakom and have a rendezvous with nature and
its essential components. Boat trips around the islands gets you closer to

or motor boats.
The ideal time to make a trip to Kumarakom bird sanctuary is between June and August.
However, to feast your eyes on the colourful migratory birds, you need to
arrive here between November and February.

» Vembanad Lake : The largest in the state of
Kerala, the Vembanad Lake is a famous picnic spot for tourists. The lake is
the point from where many rivers and canals of the state originate. Fishing
and boating are popular activities here.
» Aruvikkuzhi Waterfalls : The scenic spot is
located at a distance of 18 km from Kottayam. Apart from being a famous
picnic spot, the place also offers wonderful views of the rubber plantations
that surround it.

The nearest airport from Kumarakom is Kochi, which is 70 km away. Another
international airport is at Trivandrum which is 171 km from Kumarakom.
Kottayam, at 12 km, has regular mail and express trains from different parts
of the country. Kottayam is well linked through motorable roads with the key
