One of the most romantic backwater destinations in Kerala, Kumarakom is not a new name to bird watchers and ornithologists. This cluster of islands is home to numerous domestic and migratory avian species arriving here from as far as Siberia and parts of Central Asia. The chatter and chirp, resulting into cacophony, as you sail smoothly along the exotic backwaters.

At the Kumarakom bird sanctuary, you will watch bird species like waterfowl, cuckoo, owl, egret, heron, water duck, black-headed ibis, storks, kingfishers, woodpeckers, flycatchers etc. The endangered Siberian Cranes are a major attraction for bird watchers in Kumarakom bird sanctuary. Other commonly sighted species include larks, parrots, wood beetles, teal etc.

The ideal time to make a trip to Kumarakom bird sanctuary is between June and August. However, to feast your eyes on the colourful migratory birds, you need to arrive here between November and February.
