fine summer refuge in the state of Tamil Nadu, Ooty or Udhagamandalam is
tucked away in the Nilgiri Hills at an elevation of 7,347 feet above sea
level. Founded and developed by the British during the 19th century, the
hill town also served as the summer headquarters of the Madras Presidency.
Rolling hills, dense forests, vast plateaus and expansive tea gardens impart

Climate & Best Time to Visit
Ooty boasts a pleasant climate all the year round. During summer, you'll
need to carry cotton clothings and a light jacket. Woollens are required in
winters. During summers, temperature hovers around 25 degrees while in
winter, it drops down to a minimum of 5 degrees only. The ideal time is
either between February to May or from September to November.
Sightseeing in Ooty
» Botanical Gardens : The landscaped gardens, lying
on the slopes of the Dodabetta Peak, were set up in the year 1848 by the
Marquis of Twedale. A fossil tree trunk which dates back 20 million years is
the centre of attractions here. Besides, there are numerous exotic species
of eucalyptus and other plants.
» Dodabetta Peak : The peak (2,623 m) has the
distinction of being the highest in the Nilgiri ranges. It is situated at
the meeting point of the Western and Eastern Ghats, affording panoramic
views of the whole Nilgiri ranges.
» Ooty Lake : The picturesque lake is a major draw
for tourists. The lake came into being through the efforts of Mr John
Sullivan, the then Collector of Coimbatore. It was constructed with a view
to providing an irrigation tank to the people.

Rose Garden : Flower connoisseurs can head straight to the Rose Garden
which lies at a distance of 4 km from Charring Cross. En route, you can also
spend some time at the mini garden.
Activities to Do in Ooty
Trekking and forest walks are the first preferences for visitors to Ooty.
Apart from that, you can start and spice and tea plantation tours that
include visits to the vast plantations and the factories of production. Take
out time to take a stroll through the town of Ooty and interact with the
local people.

Getting There
Coimbatore, at a distance of 105 km, is the nearest airport from Ooty. The
airport operates regular flights to places like Chennai, Bangalore, Cochin,
Trivandrum etc. There are regular train services from Chennai to
Mettupalayam. From Mettupalayam, you can take the Swiss diesel trains to get
to Ooty. Or, you can also take a bus or hire a taxi to reach Ooty from
Mettupalayam. Road routes are also well established and there are regular
buses to Ooty from Bangalore (300 km), Mysore (170 km), Coimbatore (105 km),
Calicut (187 km), Cochin (281 km) etc.
